The guitar was introduced into the Hawaiian Island culture in the 1830's by Mexican vaqueros from Monterey, California.  No one told them there was a standard tuning, and so they ended up creating dozens of their own ingenious tunings, which were then handed down to future generations as family traditions.

I have continued this tradition with two recordings of my own - Coldwater Slack Key and Black Tea Slack Key.
